He ended his 22-year military career on the C-5 Galaxy after the first Gulf War in 1991, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was well known and respected in the local community. His elementary school music teacher noticed his fine ear for melodies, which prompted his mother to cash in an insurance policy to buy him a clarinet. She and Lauren were avid boaters in their day and travelers, especially after they both retired.
